Rat Snakes of the Genus Zamenis: Husbandry and Breeding

Stefan Moeller (Leipzig)

The European rat snakes of the genus Zamenis have always divided the herpers' community into two groups: Some think they are too complicated and less productive for "professional" breeding. For a long time it was for example kind of common sense that Elaphe bimaculata is not only as beautiful as Zamenis (Elaphe) situla, but much easier to keep and breed.
Others are fascinated by their inimitable elegance and beauty and like the idea of keeping more or less "local" snakes that can be kept in an outdoor enclosure with a bit of work and phantasy. Who ever has seen for example a
Zamenis longissimus (Aesculapian Snake, Symbol of doctors and pharmacy, named to honour Asklepios, the Greek god of medicine) moving around in the wild, must love these animals. Captive bred specimens don't make problems if some basic rules are considered.

However, since south-east Asia is in reach within a flight of some hours the European species of the former genus Elaphe have been left unattended. Just a handful of herpers can be called real experts for the five recognized species (hohenackeri, lineata, longissimus, persica, situla) and have regular breeding success.
On of them is Stefan Moeller from Leipzig, who will share his knowledge about captive care and breeding with the audience at the Breeders' Expo. He keeps all species of different morphs and has regular captive-bred hatchlings available. As a photographer with high standards he will support his lecture with high-quality pictures. Above all Stefan maintains a well made and informative web site about his animals.
