Oophaga pumilio – differences between habitat and
husbandry
Thorsten
Mahn (Hamwarde) and Thomas Ostrowski
(Hanover)
For the
last years the authors of the web data base DendroBase.de,
Thorsten Mahn and Thomas Ostrowski, have collected
information about the natural environment of the Strawberry
Poison-dart Frog (Oophaga
pumilio,
formerly Dendrobates
pumilio). Facts
and figures about the structure and clima of several island
and continental biotopes as well as data on feeding behaviour
lead to a complete picture of this species that could hardly
be any more different from the usual set-up of many terraria.
These "differences between habitat and husbandry" will be
presented in this lecture among with lots of photographs and
diagrams.
After keeping day geckoes for many years Thorsten has
switched completely to poison-dart frogs about eight years
ago and gives frogs from Latin and South America home in more
than 30 cages. He keeps not only the colourful species but
also rather inconspicuous ones like Colestethus
or
Allobates.
Since 2001
Thorsten owns, designs and programs the internet data base
DendroBase.de. Just before publishing DendroBase release 4.0
you can find over 150 pages with species descriptions, about
1,500 photographs plus videos, maps and audio files in the
web.
Thomas supports him as scientic coordinator and keeps in
touch with herpetologists around the world. He is responsible
for the major part of photographs and descriptions.
